Diligently Designed Spaces (In Residential Buildings)
A building has to be energy-oriented with minimum energy consumption. It can be easily achieved by maximizing the functionality and expansiveness of the spaces in a building.
Particularly in residential buildings, the following design aspects can be incorporated in the layout in order to enhance space utilization along with reduced energy consumption:-
L-Shape Placement - The living, dining, and kitchen can be placed in L-Shape such that the distance between the openings on opposite walls reduce.
- Brings the natural source of air closer
- Allows cross-ventilation via the balcony and kitchen window
- Reduces dependency on electricity
- It allows an abundant flow of natural light in the livable areas. Thus, keeping them well-lit all day.
Light in livable areas: The bedrooms and living rooms can be placed such as the room windows face outside green areas, ensuring ample light infrequently used spaces during the day.
- Outward facing large windows in livable areas provide abundant natural light.
- No dark corners in the layout, Only well-lit rooms.
Privacy in units: The placement of the foyer has to be done in a way so it does not allow outsiders to peep into the other bedrooms and gives a limited view of the living room. The guest bedroom can be placed across the living room in a manner that the other bedrooms can maintain their privacy.
- Separate toilet for the living & on visit guests.
- Separate entry/ toilet for maid/ help
Maximum utilization of space can be achieved through:
Parallel walls -
- Parallel walls achieve maximum utilizable area. This helps in removing unwanted walls. Each space seamlessly flows into another.
- Unnecessary corners, corridors or passages, and dead spaces should be avoided. Every square inch of space should be utilizable.
Duct for Toilet/ Utility
- Toilets placement can be done around the shafts (if any, in case of apartments, etc.). Reduces maintenance cost due to better access to plumbing.
Tucked-in recessed wardrobe
- Tucked-in recessed wardrobe makes the entire room utilizable.
Additional Design Features
A few design elements can be added in order to enhance the luxury quotient of the project, be it a private residence or apartment project. Some of which include:
An Open Kitchen/ Dining Area: The idea of providing an open kitchen/ dining instead of an enclosed one is uplift the livability of the space. One would definitely enjoy a cup of coffee in the dining while having an evening chit-chat with their loved one who might be baking some cookies in the kitchen.
Indoor/ Outdoor Mini-Bar
A mini-bar for home could be an ideal entertainment spot for some quality time with friends and family. We just need a small bar top and a few stools and a little cocktail prep area, which can be perfectly adjusted anywhere in the apartment, be it the balcony or one corner near the dining area.
Indoor Home Bar - A home bar adjacent to the kitchen/ dining area would make the space much livelier.
Mini-Bar on the Balcony - If one doesn’t want to compromise space in the indoors then the untapped balcony would be excellent for creating a mini-bar. One can unwind all the hustle & bustle of day-to-day life overlooking the beautiful cityscape while taking wine sips.
To conclude
Every square inch of space matters in designing a space. We architects aim to create a space that one doesn’t see a single stretch of unwanted space or a piece of meaningless design. All this and more makes a design unique & aptly functional for the user.
