Money saving hacks while traveling to Sydney, Australia!

While traveling, I had this habit of buying coffee, try-out every other eaterie around the corner, taking Uber everywhere and shop wherever I go. A friend of mine had a glimpse of my extravagant traveling instincts. She said “God! I wonder what you would do in Sydney. A traveler with your kind spending habits would make their wallet cry-out loud” she added. This incident intrigued me to do a little research for myself on money-saving hacks while traveling to Australia’s biggest and priciest destination – Sydney.

Choose the suburbs to stay

The accommodation is too pricey in the central part of the city, or in the popular & overcrowded areas, which will cost more than a hundred dollars at least. Just a bus ride away from the city, cheaper accommodation is available in the suburbs such as Glebe – a hipster neighborhood. These suburbs come with street-side cafes, pubs, restaurants, and many other enthralling destinations. So you save money for the prior city kind of stuff and hang in the suburbs otherwise.

Use public transport options

The city has a swift transport network. But choose the smarter way, otherwise, your travel expenses can quickly pile up here. The best way is to pick a day for all the expensive traveling and ride around all day on ferries to check out the popular neighborhoods and more. It’s better to use an Opal Card, which is free to buy and the minimum credit required is just $10 AUD (for an adult). These are applicable for selected stops and selected routes only.

Moreover, Sunday is always better to travel here, as all transport facilities will cost around $2.60 for the whole day, that too for everything!

Beaches are free!

The coastal walk along Bondi, Coogee, Tamaranta, Maroubra, Bronte and many other beaches, is quite popular among locals and travelers here. And it comes for free! One can unwind from the daily grind along these beaches, be it an Insta-shot moment, a family picnic, or be swimming with your buddies, or just lounging all day with your partner.

Avoid spending on touristy areas

Amongst the main attractions in Sydney are The Harbour Bridge, the Opera House, and The Rocks, just to name a few. The best way one can experience these places is to walk around, and it won’t cost a thing. All these places are within walking distance of each other, which is an advantage to the tourists. Just don’t stick around here to eat or drink, unless you want to spill money over things you actually don’t need.

The Happy-Hours and the Barbecues

In Sydney, the best way to avoid unnecessary spending on booze is to keep yourself updated about “Happy Hours” in nearby areas. Apps like – the Happiest Hour app, will get you to find such cheap deals nearby.

When it comes to food, try the Aussie stuff – the barbecues! This is something which is in trend from the historical times in Australia. Particularly in Sydney, plenty of parks, and public plazas have facilities for barbecues which are free to use. So, pick your cooking stuff and try these out. Also, inner-city suburbs like Darlinghurst, Surry Hills, Redfern, Ultimo, and Glebe have many cheap eateries and pubs.

To sum up

According to The Economist, Sydney is the 14th most expensive places in the world, with a higher cost of living than other than London, San Francisco, and Stockholm. However, if you try to save money on everything you can imagine without cutting out vital things, of course, your trip to Sydney would make your wallet happy.
